Single-Hung Windows vs. Double-Hung Windows

If your windows aren’t in good shape, now is the time to replace them—before it gets cold. Summer is just ending, but before we know it, the temperatures will start dropping!

If you need new windows for your home, you’ve probably been researching. And you’ve probably come across the terms “double-hung” and “single-hung.” What’s the difference between them? Which one is better?

Difference Between Double-Hung & Single-Hung Windows

These two window styles are very similar (they even have similar names!) but aren’t exactly the same. Double-hung windows have two moving sashes—both the upper and lower sash slide up and down vertically. On the other hand, the lower sash of a single-hung window slides vertically to open and the upper sash remains stationary.

Both types of windows have their own benefits.

Double-hung windows:

  • Are easy to clean because of their sash design, double-hung windows are very easy to open and clean.
  • Provide great ventilation – don’t want to run your AC and prefer fresh outdoor air? Double-hung windows open all the way to let in a cool breeze.
  • Can provide increased safety if you have small children or pets, you can leave the upper sash open to get a breeze and not have to worry about safety hazards.
  • Offer versatility these windows come in a variety of colors and offer an attractive design that can complement any home.

  • Have fewer moving parts the more moving parts there are, the higher the chance of something breaking or experiencing a problem.
  • Offer versatility these windows come in a variety of colors and offer an attractive design that can complement any home.

Which Window Should You Get?

If a lower price is the most important to you, single-hung windows may be your best option. For a window that offers excellent ventilation and can provide increased safety, perhaps you want to go with double-hung windows.
