Is your garage door behaving erratically? Something could be wrong with the limit switches, which are settings that tell the garage door opener when to stop. An incorrectly programmed limit switch could prevent the door from opening or closing all the way. It could also cause the door to open again after hitting the ground. The key to fixing these problems is to reset the limit switches.

Garage Door Doesn’t Open All the Way
- Press the button on your remote to open the garage door. Measure the distance from the top of the garage door opening to the bottom of the garage door in inches.
- Stand on a step ladder to reach the up limit switch adjustment screw on the side of the garage door opener.
- Using a flathead screwdriver, turn the screw clockwise one full turn for every 3 inches you need the door to raise so it opens all the way.
- Open and close the garage door. If the problem remains, continue adjusting the up limit switch until the door operates normally.
Garage Door Doesn’t Close All the Way
- Press the button on your remote to close the garage door. When the door stops, measure the distance from the ground to the bottom of the garage door in inches.
- Using a flathead screwdriver, turn the down limit switch adjustment screw on the side of the garage door opener counterclockwise one full turn for every 3 inches you need the door to lower so it closes all the way.
- Open and close the garage door. If the problem remains, continue adjusting the down limit switch until the door operates normally.
