Importance of Reliable Garage Door Openers

Professional Garage Door Services in Muncie & Indianapolis

If your garage door isn’t opening or closing, there is undoubtedly a problem, but not necessarily with the door itself. Sometimes, garage door openers can cause issues that need to be solved immediately, or the safety of your home is compromised.

There are three main types of garage door openers:

  • Belt-driven: These use a metal-reinforced rubber belt to operate the door. Although they aren’t the cheapest option, belt-driven garage doors are reliable and boast quiet operation, making them ideal for homes and commercial projects.
  • Chain-driven: A widely used type of garage door opener, these are one of the most affordable types. They are also highly reliable.
  • Screw-driven: These types of garage door openers have a steel rod that runs on a lifting device. Although they are noisier than belt-driven and chain-driven garage door openers, they can be an affordable option. Screw-driven garage doors are also low-maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a garage door opener work in my space if I have a low ceiling in my garage?

Yes. A residential door requires a minimum of 4 ½ inches of headroom space. Your system will need a low headroom extension track or a low headroom torsion rear track. You will need slightly more headroom for a garage door opener — about 6 ½ inches at a minimum.

How can I get a new remote control for my garage door opener?

Your Overhead Door distributor can provide you with a broad range of opener accessories, from remote controls to wireless keypads. First, you will need to determine if your opener is a newer model with CodeDodger® or an older model that does not have CodeDodger®.

However, if your opener was manufactured before 1980, you have an analog-type opener that we no longer carry remotes for, and your system will need to be upgraded with a new receiver kit. These kits are available in our parts department.

Can I install a garage door opener myself?

The better question is, “Do I want to install a garage door opener myself?” DIY-ers are the best homeowners because they are informed and always seeking knowledge. But the best DIYers know when to call a professional. Installing a garage door opener is one of those times:

  • Injuries are possible. If you fall or electrocute yourself trying to install a garage door opener, you’ll need a professional to finish the job anyway. You’re now paying someone to do what could’ve been done before you hurt yourself.
  • You don’t have the right tools. If you try to complete the installation using the tools you have, you risk damaging parts of the opener or areas of your home. You’ll possibly void the warranty. There are many moving parts in a garage door opener. It’s complicated for someone without experience.
  • Your time is valuable, too. Without professional knowledge, installing a garage door opener will take you at least twice as long as your local garage door professional. Correcting mistakes is also frustrating, such as being unable to shut the garage door and putting everything inside at risk for damage or theft.

How do I change the garage door opener code?

All garage door openers have instructions in a manual, on the keypad and/or online. If you’ve checked those places and you’re coming up empty, try this process to change your keyless keypad code:

  1. Clear any obstructions from the area (especially kids and pets).
  2. Enter your current code.
  3. Press/hold the # button until the garage door opener light blinks twice. (Some openers request you hold both the * and the # buttons.)
  4. Enter your new four-digit code.
  5. Press ENTER. The opener lights will blink once.
