Types of Attic Insulation

You’ll probably be spending more and more time outside as it gets warmer—but that doesn’t mean you should ignore temperatures inside your home. To save money on your bills and stay comfortable when you’re inside, you’ll want to make sure your home is as energy-efficient as possible! What is a good way to do this? Start by insulating the attic, one of the biggest sources of energy loss in homes.

Your Options

In warmer climates, it’s common to install a radiant barrier in the attic. But in cooler regions with more inconsistent temperatures year-round, like here in Indianapolis, it can be more cost-effective to install thermal insulation. While spray foam is sometimes used—usually in unfinished attic floors—fiberglass is one of the most common insulation materials installed in attics.

There are two types of fiberglass insulation:

Blown-In

Blown-in, or blown, fiberglass insulation works well in attics with:

  • Irregular joist spacing
  • Many obstructions (like piping, ductwork, etc.)
  • Insulation that needs to be topped off (it easily fills small gaps)
  • Limited headroom

Blown insulation is also referred to as loose-fill (cellulose insulation is available in loose-fill form).

Batt

Batt, or blanket, insulation works well in attics with:

  • Standard joist spacing, particularly if there is no insulation
  • Few obstructions
  • A lot of head room

Benefits of Insulating the Attic

Whether you install batt or blown insulation, there are several benefits of insulating the attic. It can help:

  • Reduce your energy bills
  • Keep your home—especially the second story—more comfortable
  • Improve the performance of your HVAC systems
  • Contribute to a healthier environment
