Extension Springs vs. Torsion Springs
There are two types of garage door springs:
Both springs help lift and lower the door, but there are some differences between them.
Extension springs, traditionally used more often, are parallel to the track. They contract as the garage door opens.
Torsion springs, which run parallel to the door, help counterbalance the door’s weight so it’s able to operate more easily. Torsion springs generally facilitate smoother garage door operation and tend to be stronger and more durable.
Having a garage door spring problem?
If the door doesn’t operate correctly, makes excessive noises when opening or closing or doesn’t operate smoothly, there could be a problem with a spring.
Keep in mind that if you have two springs on your door and only one breaks, both should be replaced. If only one is replaced, the second is more likely to break within the next few months.
